What are some advantages of paying out-of-pocket?
Here are some reasons that people choose to pay out-of-pocket.
Best Fit
When you pay out of pocket you can choose the therapist you want to work with and are not limited to .
Privacy
Self pay offers increased privacy around health information. Insurance companies require a diagnosis and may request to access your records.
Flexibility
When you pay out of pocket you may be seen sooner. You also have more say around what you work on, how long the sessions are, and how long you stay in therapy. No waiting for prior authorizations needed.
Using Out-of-Network benefits
-
Each month my secure records portal sends you a “superbill” which is a specialized receipt that you submit to your insurance company.
The superbill includes the following information:
My contact information and tax information.
Your contact information
Your diagnosis (this is required by insurance)
Your fees paid, and session days/times
-
You can confirm your out of network benefits by contacting your insurance carrier directly and ask them the following questions:
“I will be paying my therapist out of pocket at the rate of $175. How much will I be reimbursed through my plan?”
“Is online therapy covered?“
“What is the deductible amount I will need to meet before I am reimbursed?”
“My therapist will give me a superbill for my appointments. How to I submit the superbill? Is there another form I need to submit as well?”
“When will I receive payment and will they send a check or will they direct deposit the reimbursement?”
Please note: Although many clients have been reimbursed by their insurance company, reimbursement is not guaranteed and widely varies from policy to policy.
Good Faith Estimate
Effective January 1, 2022, a ruling went into effect called the "No Surprises Act" which requires practitioners to provider a "Good Faith Estimate" of costs for private pay services. This Good Faith Estimate shows the costs of items and services that are reasonably expected for your health care needs for an item or service. Should you be charged over $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate you may dispute (appeal) the bill.
